Blogger Spotlight: Hoosier Gardener
Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp, who blogs as the “Hoosier Gardener” and writes a column of the same name for The Indianapolis Star, describes herself as a “seat-of-the-pants, trial-and-error gardener.”
“I’m not a horticulturalist – I just play one in the (Indianapolis) Star,” she says.
She’s been a gardening blogger for at least 10 years. A confessed “hortiholic” (someone who can’t have enough plants – she tries many new varieties every year in her Indianapolis yard), she says she writes for people who aren’t expert gardeners.
A former newspaper reporter, Sharp now works as a freelance writer, editor and photographer. She also co-authored The Indiana Gardener’s Guide, penned the Visitor’s Guide to American Gardens and gives around 20 talks or workshops every year.
But although she’s hooked on gardening, she’s not a worrier, she adds. “I sort of let Mother Nature do her thing. I try to keep my plants happy and enjoy them, but I don’t fuss over them.”
