Celebrate National Popcorn Poppin’ Month in Indiana

September 27, 2010 By Jessica Walker

While October wasn’t officially declared National Popcorn Poppin’ Month until 1999, the holiday has been celebrated for more than 25 years.

This favored treat certainly deserves to be celebrated. Delicious and nutritious, popcorn is lower in calories than most snacks, weighing in at just 31 calories per cup when air-popped; oil-popped corn packs 55 calories in a cup.

Popcorn also holds a special place in two Indiana cities, as both Valparaiso and Van Buren claim to be the Popcorn Capital of the World. In addition, the state produces a large portion of the nation’s popcorn.
