Indiana Suffers Driest June on Record, Drought Affects State
July 18, 2012 By Rachel Bertone
A recent article in The Hoosier Farmer stated that according to the National Weather Service, only 0.09 inches of rain were recorded for Indianapolis in the month of June, which makes it official: for many parts of the state, this has been the driest June on record, even surpassing the drought of 1988.
In a report from the U.S. Drought Monitor released June 28, 2012, most of the state is now in moderate, severe or extreme drought.
To help farmers, homeowners and community leaders, Purdue Extension has created a website, IN Drought, that provides information and resources on how to manage issues caused by the drought. It also directs farmers toward Purdue websites and resources that can help, as well as provides links to Extension publications and tips for homeowners on how to keep plants healthy, protect lawns, conserve water and avoid heat stress.
