Celebrate National Pie Day on January 23 by indulging in the official Hoosier state pie: sugar cream pie.
The recipe for the pie appears to have originated in eastern Indiana, dating back to the early 1800s when the creamy dessert was likely enjoyed at various Quaker settlements. Today, the pie can be enjoyed at many locally owned restaurants throughout Indiana, including this Sugar Cream Pie recipe from Nick’s Kitchen in Huntington.
Depending on who you ask, sugar cream pie recipes can vary, but most call for a combination of sugar, heavy or whipping cream, and butter to be baked in a pie crust, with optional egg yolk, flour and nutmeg or vanilla, which varies from source to source.
A few Indiana eateries that offer traditional versions of the sweet treat are Concannon’s Bakery, Café and Coffee Bar in Muncie, Storie’s Restaurant in Greensburg and Nick’s Kitchen (pictured, courtesy of Marcus Rae Photography).

Thanks for sharing, Deanna! We’ll have to check them out!

I have informed the office of tourism and many others who perpetuate this myth. It is simply not correct.
