The Monastery Gift Shop in Ferdinand features a delightful assortment of gourmet cookies and other baked goods made by the Sisters of St. Benedict.
They began by making and selling springerles, a traditional German cookie, in support of the annual Christkindlmarkt. Their instant popularity led them to create almerles – almond-flavored cookies similar in texture and appearance to the springerle. Over time, many more baked delights were added, from classics including peanut butter cookies, gingersnaps, starlets and Hildegards to noncookie favorites, such as Sister Anita’s Bourbon Soaked Fruit Cake, made from a recipe handed down to the prioress from her baker grandfather.
While the bakery has had several names, they settled on Monastery Baked Goods in 2015 to connect the products more closely with the sisters who make them. Visit them online at thedome.org/monastery-baked-goods or in person for their famous cookies, Prayerful Pretzels and more.
Note: This product was featured as a giveaway in our Spring 2025 issue. The giveaway has now ended. Thanks to all who participated.
