Used as Indiana’s capitol building from 1816 to 1825, the square Federal-style limestone Capitol State Historic Site Museum building is in the heart of downtown. After the capital moved to Indianapolis, it was used as the Harrison County Courthouse and later opened as a state memorial in 1930. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can purchase tickets for walk-up tours, with group rates and discounts available.

2. Constitution Elm

Also called the Hoosier Elm, the Constitution Elm offered shade in 1816 for 43 delegates who drafted Indiana’s first constitution. In 1916, the tree was placed prominently on the official commemorative medallion, then sadly died nine years later of Dutch elm disease. Wood from the tree was used to construct local barns and houses, and around 15 feet of the trunk became part of the large stone structure found in downtown Corydon today.
