The Fort Wayne Museum of Art celebrates Dia de los Muertos with a community event welcoming all to learn more about the holiday and join in on the festivities in Indiana. On Nov. 2, visitors will enjoy a gallery exhibition, traditional dancing, children’s activities, mariachi, folkloric characters, complimentary baked goods, a cash bar and a Mexican food truck.

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a festive Mexican tradition to honor and remember deceased loved ones and ancestors. Ancient Latin American civilizations honored death as an essential part of life, and throughout Mexico’s history this transformed into the present Day of the Dead celebrations, blending Spanish and Latin American cultures, celebrated Nov. 1 and 2.

The museum’s Dia de los Muertos exhibition, which is open Oct. 4 through Nov. 9, features the ofrendas, or memorial altars, that provide a place to leave offerings so the departed souls might find their way home and be nourished upon arrival. Symbolic ofrenda elements include sugar skulls, candles, colorful paper banners, marigolds and monarch butterflies. Fort Wayne artists, families and community groups create their own altar for visitors to enjoy during the event.

Admission is free for the event. For the latest updates and to learn more, visit fwmoa.org/events.
