When visiting northwest Indiana this summer, be sure to explore the South Shore brewery and winery trails. With more than 30 stops, the trails boast a thriving community of breweries, wineries, meaderies, cideries and distilleries with casual ambiances. Nestled along Lake Michigan, many spots offer food and live music, with several being dog- and family-friendly.

The South Shore Brewery Trail app has maps, tours, events, outdoor seating availability and a passport challenge that awards free swag to brewery visitors. The South Shore Winery Trail boasts award-winning wines to please all palettes, with each stop offering a signature wine, cider or mead.

“All of the breweries and wineries are unique in their own way. Whether you are looking for a quiet and quaint atmosphere, or you are looking for something more upbeat with live entertainment or trivia, you will find it here,” says Heather Becerra, South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority chief marketing officer.

Anderson’s Winery

With 43 acres of charming countryside, Anderson’s Winery offers plenty for visitors to discover. From dry white Vignoles to deep red Chambourcin and varieties in between, they provide wine picnics, comfy seating indoors and out, and live music every Saturday and Sunday. “Our guests enjoy exploring our property, and we have a lovely food menu to go with our wines so our visitors can sit back and eat, drink and relax,” Anderson’s owner Denna Fyock says.

An enchanting farm winery producing world-class wines, Carpenter Creek Cellars offers free wine tastings, outdoor seating, music on the lawn, private event space rentals and Port, the friendliest dog in Jasper County. Their award-winning wines contain only the best Midwestern-grown grapes that visitors can enjoy in the pristine barn, housing the open and airy tasting room.

Four Corners Winery

Four Corners Winery & Wedding Venue welcomes visitors to a rustic and idyllic 1870s farmhaus transformed into a unique tasting room with a large selection of reds, whites and fruit wines. Byway Brewing

Byway Brewing offers an impressive range of crowlers (growlers in a can), bottled beers and chef-inspired food at their convenient location in Hammond. Private events in a fun atmosphere are also on tap, along with on-site catering in addition to live music and private dinners. Crown Brewing creates craft beer recipes appealing to a broad range of customers. Owner Dave Bryan develops varieties of porters, ales and lagers along with an impressive food menu. “We try to keep a large variety of 15 to 17 of our own beers on tap with mainstays like Dude Java Porter and Mayzie Cream Ale and seasonal beers like pumpkin beer in the fall and bolgarbard in the summer,” Bryan says.

Fenwick Farms Brewing Company

As Rensselaer’s first and only craft brewery, Fenwick Farms is a community-based nano-brewery where guests can find small-town values and exceptional craft beer, including seasonal ales and light lagers. Partnering with local farms for the freshest ingredients, they offer an extensive food menu along with a unique private-event space paired with an event team to assist with functions big and small.

Ironwood Brewing

Beers at Ironwood Brewing are malt-forward balanced with a nice variety of hops that are “true-to-style” with an occasional twist. Varieties like robust porter, Belgian stout, Irish red ale and American IPAs can be found in the original 1930s brick house that underwent major renovations to be energy-efficient and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant while still keeping with the original mystique of the historic building.

A family-friendly, family-owned brewery and restaurant on the edge of Lake Michigan, award-winning Shoreline Brewery always has 12 beers on tap along with craft cocktails and contemporary American and globally inspired cuisine. Beerfests, open mic nights and live music can also be found at Shoreline Brewery, an ideal location for any occasion.

Zorn Brew Works

Open seven days a week, Zorn Brew Works offers 24 craft beers on tap, from rich, bold dark stouts to mellow, pale amber ales. When visiting this iconic Michigan City brewery, customers can experience the former carriage house converted into the taproom and enjoy live music and events along with outstanding pub fare and a dog-friendly patio with firepits when weather permits.
