After making mints for her sister’s wedding shower, Brooke Schmidt’s homemade candies quickly became in demand among friends and family, and was selling out of her sweet treats by the age of 14.
When Schmidt and her husband moved to Indiana in 2004, she made her dream of owning her own candy shop a reality. She opened her first retail shop with her mother, Donna, and sister, Dana, in 2007.
Since starting her own business, Schmidt has expanded and now owns Brooke’s Naturals as well, providing all-natural, gluten- and rice-free baking mixes and treats to the wholesale market. Though she no longer has a retail storefront, Schmidt’s wholesale business is booming. Brooke’s Naturals can be found in a variety of retailers, including Target, Kroger and Giant Eagle Market District.
Along with its baking mixes, the company sells gourmet brownie, toffee and party favor packs – making for the perfect present.

In Texas we have peanut patties, which are peanuts in a mixture of Caro and Sugar. We have tried making them, but the whole process of “soft boil” is beyond our ability.

When I was a kid the grocery stores used to have an endless variety of candy bats, but now you are limited to what is in the checkout lines because of theft concerns. You probably couldn’t find a Whatchamacallit or Caramello to save your life.
Cookies and milk are always a favorite treat in our home.
Chocolate covered cherries have always been a favorite treat of mine. It isn’t so much the cherry, but the white filling they put inside!!
