Indiana is no stranger to extreme weather. Tornados in December? Sure. Snowstorm in April? Why not? Hail in February? It’s happened.

As the joke goes, “if you don’t like Indiana’s weather, stick around for five minutes, and it will change.” Though funny, extreme weather is no laughing matter which is why Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance encourages you to set a safety plan.

Annually, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the National Weather Service promote Severe Weather Preparedness Week in March to remind and educate Hoosiers about severe weather threats. While the spring brings storm season to the Hoosier state, there are several ways you can ensure you are prepared should the unexpected happen.

“Every spring, we see hundreds of claims from hail, wind and tornados, some of which result in complete destruction,” says Darrin Walton, executive director of claims at Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance. “We support Severe Weather Preparedness Week because after the storm happens is not the right time to make sure you have the proper insurance coverage and safety plan. You need those things before an emergency occurs. You can never be too safe.”

Be Prepared

The American Red Cross has excellent guides to help you develop an emergency and safety plan with your family.

Know where you’re going to meet in case you can’t get home and phones are down.

Have a disaster kit on hand with items such as canned food, water, first aid, flashlights (with extra batteries), cash and changes of clothing.

Pay attention to tornado watches and warnings. Remember, watches mean conditions are ideal for a tornado while a warning means a tornado has been spotted and you should seek cover immediately.

If you are a victim of severe weather, insurance will help you rebuild and recover. Reach out to an agent to ensure your insurance coverage fits your needs and covers your most important assets should severe weather strike.
