First cultivated more than 5,000 years ago, lima beans have quite an intriguing history. The bean’s popularity with the Aztec and Inca cultures is reflected in many different artifacts, and, of course, in the name of the bean itself – named after Lima, Peru. Enjoy these interesting facts about lima beans.

There are two basic types of lima beans: bush and pole. Bush type are typically smaller and mature faster, developing on bushes that grow to be about 2 feet tall. Pole type are a climbing plant, and the beans are typically larger and take longer to mature.
