Summertime in Indiana means picnics, cookouts and barbecues. Family reunions, potlucks and pitch-ins. Trips to the ballpark, beach and campground. These all-American pastimes usually include delicious eats such as hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, pie and lemonade.

“Bring them on!” I say as a practical, food-loving dietitian. Just blend and balance decadence with nutrient-rich foods when possible and get plenty of calorie-burning activity.

And since you’re watching your overall added sugars, instead of having both dessert and sugary lemonade, pick one or the other. Or combine them into one decadent dessert, like my No-Bake Key Lime Pie. The no-baking part means no oven heat, so the refrigerator does the work while you’re enjoying the summer sunshine.
