An ode to two leaders who shaped the future proudly stands tall in Indianapolis. The Landmark for Peace, a memorial sculpture of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, commemorates the slain leaders on the ground where Kennedy spoke in Indianapolis on the night of King’s assassination.

April 2023 marked the 55th anniversary of Kennedy’s speech. Kennedy had come to Indianapolis in 1968 for a regular campaign speech but ended up being the person who had to inform the predominantly Black audience of King’s assassination. A few months later, Kennedy was also assassinated.

The sculpture, dedicated in 1955, features Kennedy and King reaching out to each other and was created from two massive curves of corten steel by Indianapolis sculptor Daniel Edwards. Indianapolis writer Greg R. Perry submitted the design concept chosen for the Landmark of Peace.

The theme of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, where the Landmark for Peace is located, is reconciliation and peace. Visitors are invited to reflect on the work of both leaders as well as the park’s theme.

How’s the sculpture going to be dedicated in 1955?
