When Jack Frost nips at your nose, it is great to curl up in front of a glowing fireplace. But remember, fireplaces account for nearly half of residential home fires.
Whether your fireplace is wood burning or gas burning, creosote can build up in the chimney and ignite. For safety’s sake, clean your fireplace annually at the beginning of the winter season.
In wood-burning fireplaces, use wood that has air-dried for a year and use only newspaper or kindling to start a fire.
Most importantly, make sure you have working smoke detectors properly located throughout the house.
