Winter brings with it cozy nights by the fireplace, lots of holiday cooking and pine-scented candles – all lovely… and all fire hazards. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance and the American Red Cross wish to remind you of important tips to help prevent home fires while still enjoying the poetic novelties of the winter season.
4. Tend to Your Christmas Tree
According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are as many Christmas tree-related fires after Christmas as there are before the holiday. Keep live Christmas trees watered and make sure extension cords are not frayed or overloaded.
While preventing fires is critically important, knowing what to do in the case of a fire is equally important. Be sure you and your family are educated on fire safety and have an evacuation plan. And remember to test your home’s smoke alarms once a month and replace batteries at least once a year.
Visit Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance’s Learning Center at infarmbureau.com to access a Home Fire Safety Checklist, Family Evacuation Plan and more. You may also access “Picking up the Pieces,” a guide for recovery after a disaster, in the learning center or at your local Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance office.
