Grain bins are dangerous places. According to Purdue University, it takes only 3 to 5 seconds for a person caught in flowing grain to become helpless. And once someone’s stuck, it’s difficult for even trained rescue workers to get him out.

An effective technique is to use a grain rescue tube. The device is pushed down in the grain that surrounds the entrapped person, preventing more grain from pressing up against him and allowing rescue workers to scoop out the grain that surrounds him.

Pike County Farm Bureau received an Impact Award in the “public relations and education” category for its farm safety program that included the purchase of a grain rescue tube for a local fire department and, with the help of other local groups, providing training for its use. Twenty-three firefighters received the training.
